Appareled Abode | White Hot Magenta!

For the first installment of my Appareled Abode Series I decided to go with a fun pop of color. Magenta.

I was inspired by this white outfit with magenta accents for my Apparel portion....

Although this outfit is on trend and super cute, I personally am not sure if I would be brave enough to rock the  bustier  (I think it's a little too young for this 30 something year old). I would change out the top for a similar style spaghetti strap tank in a longer length and tuck it into the skirt. Anyone women out there that can pull it off... ROCK IT! Regardless, I love this look!

This is my rendition on how to pull off this look in your Abode!

Mixing lots of white with patterned magenta elements give this abode lots of color and texture but still keeping it clean with the main elements being white. Adding pops of metallic in with the bedside and chair side tables give this room some texture just like jewelry would to an outfit.

Love the looks in this Appareled Abode?  Here is where you get everything you see here!

Apparel:
Jersey Bustier | Tulip Wrap Skirt | Ankle Wrap Sandals | White Patent Leather Clutch | Nars Lip gloss | Korres Plum Lip Butter

Abode: Ivory Linen Chair | Magenta Pillow Cover | Square Gold Table | Round Gold Side Table | Console Table | White Tufted Bed | Rug | Duvet

I hope this post inspires you to peek into your closet to style your home! What styles would you like to see in future post of APPARELED ABODE? Leave  me a comment for suggestions or contact me for design help!

Appareled Abode

As many of you know, fashion inspires me when creating interior designs. I love getting ideas to decorate homes through many outlets. Not only interior design and decor magazines but also from flipping through fashion mags, reading fashion blogs and of course perusing Pinterest. With this inspiration I have started a new series for the blog called....

Once a week, Appareled Abode with take outfits/garments and show you how to use them as a muse to style your home. I will select the outfit or garment piece and design a room based around it.

Love the outfit? Love the room? Well your in luck because all the items included in both the outfit and decor will be listed after each post.

Do you have a "go to" piece in your closet that you love or an outfit that inspires you?  I offer this service to my clients so contact me and I would be happy to assist you in creating your space to reflect your personal style. This is just another way I hope to help inspire you to

Drugstore Makeup Finds

Like most women I am always searching for new products. I am guilty of the impulse makeup buy every time I go into a CVS or Target. You know the deal, you go in for toothpaste and walk out $50 later with a bag of "stuff".

The packaging is what usually gets my attention first. I am a sucker for really great packaging (maybe that's the designer in me...).  Most drugstores don't have testers that you can sample like you can in Sephora or Ulta.  I tend to grab the color that is most appealing to me or I believe is closest to my skin tone only to have the product be completely off tone and sit in my makeup area opened and never used. I literally have a slew of bags and bins filled with blushes, eye shadows and foundations that were just off and I have never bothered to return.

I have my staples of higher end products that I use but because they come with a hefty price tag (I will do another post with these products in the near future) so I decided I really need to invest in everyday wearable makeup that doesn't hurt my wallet and save the more expensive ones for going out at night and special occasions. Plus I find the more expensive products come with less product. How annoying is that?

I took a "selfie" today with the five drugstore makeup finds on and my three must have products I will be listing below.

First let me say if you are going to invest money into any beauty product you should splurge on a great moisturizer. I previously used Hope In A Jar by Philosophy daily but after a while I realized that my skin is changing as I am getting older and it was time to try something new. I found that I like serums and oils best now. I currently use Josie Maran Argan Oil and absolutely love it. That is always my first step in my fight against aging. My second step is to put on Boots No7 Protect and Perfect Serum. A little goes a long way with this product. I use it on my face and neck. My third step is my new find Benefit It's Potent! eye cream. This is great for helping to minimize those pesky dark circles that just never seem to go away even after 12 hours of sleep (if your ever lucky enough to sleep that long) and let's face it, we never do. My fourth and final step before applying my makeup is to use Benefit POREfessional. This balm minimizes the appearance of your pores and is really the only primer you will ever need. So when I spend money on products, it's on the ones that I don't wash off at the end of the day.

I like more natural looking daytime makeup. Less is more approach I'd say. I have olive skin (thanks to my Italian and Chilean background) and it can be tough to find a foundation that matches my skin tone without being to pinky beige or too ghostly.

I fell in love with L'Oreal True Match. I wear Sun Beige (W6) and it matches my skin perfectly. It's not a heavy foundation and really lasts all day long. It even covers up those dark circles which is key!

To help my eyes look bright and natural I use  Maybelline Eyestudio Color Tattoo  cream shadow in Inked in Pink. It doesn't crease and truly stays on for 24 hrs. Let's face it, we are all guilty of going to bed without taking our makeup off once in a while and I have woken up with this eye shadow still on. Plus it's great as a highlighter if you are wearing a heavier   color going out at night.

I brighten up my cheeks and add a pop of color with Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso. It gives the perfect peachy pink glow.

To finish off my daytime look I usually only wear mascara. I have always mixed mascara brands. I guess it's like mixing lipstick to get the perfect color. I mix these two to give me the perfect full yet long natural looking lashes without the clumps. First I put on L'Oreal Voluminous mascara in Carbon Black and then I put on one coat of Rimmel Lash Accelorator in black. I also put a little on my lower lashes.
I slab a little Buxom lipgloss in Dolly on and I am out the door.

This makeup routine takes me 5-10 minutes a day start to finish. It's simple, quick and inexpensive. Who doesn't love that? You get a natural looking face without going broke. Now that's a two-fer!

A Little Weekend DIY

I really took advantage of the gloomy, rainy, dank weather this long weekend and made the most out of it with a trip to Ikea. I have my mom here for the week and since she my favorite shopping sidekick I thought who better than to take with me!

I had quite a few items on the list that I needed to get. Of course I left with more than I had planned to purchase...c'est la vie!

So my main reason for going to Ikea is to get another Billy bookcase for my office. My husband has been asking me if he can keep his important paperwork in my office (ususally it is strewn all over the dining room table or on the chest in the guest bedroom in a towering pile).   I obliged just to get the stacks under control since I despise clutter and would really like my dining room table to be used for eating and pretty flower arrangements. So selfish, I know.

I already had one Billy Bookcase in my office but thought that it would be much easier to purchase another than rearrange the existing one.  I was already running out of space with all  my fabric, flooring, rug samples and catalogs.  I mean, if we got another bookcase we could split it. BRILLIANT!

The Ikea Billy bookcases are great for the money. They are only $59.99 and you can customize them anyway you want. Best of all they are one of the easies Ikea products to put together.

I purchased mine in white to match my office decor but then added a little bit of pop to this bookcase.

For Ikea products it is very important that you read the directions carefully (by read I really mean look at the pictures carefully as there aren't any words).  I put all the stationary pieces together first.  There are two shelves that are not adjustable so I had to make sure those were in place and secure before my next step.

The backing of the bookcase is just board painted white. It's very flimsy and quite boring frankly. I didn't know what I wanted to do to make it different but I knew I didn't want it to be blah.
I toyed with the idea of painting it the aqua color of my office walls to give it some depth but I decided that was still too boring. I then thought of stenciling the back of it also in a fun, bright paint color.  I had done that before in a client's media center and it came out great but the only problem was the stencil I loved was too large in print for the back of the bookcase. It just wouldn't look right.
When I was at Ikea I grabbed 4 yards of fabric I thought would make a great Euro pillow for one of my guest rooms but I quickly realized I had a better place for it.... Behind the bookcase.

I love this fabric. It's modern, abstract and best of all black & white! My office is Aqua with black & white accents and hints of metallic. I have a black & white zebra rug, and this fabric would go great with it!

I measured out the fabric 31"W x 79"H and cut to size.
I layed the bookcase backing down with white side up and placed my fabric over it with the fabric print side up. I then used Peel & Stick tape and placed it evenly throughout the back of the fabric. Once all the tape was on I slowly adhered it to the front of the backing board and used a level to make sure there were no lumps or bubbles in the fabric.  I placed the board onto the back of the bookcase, nailed in the finish nails to hold the board in place and it was finished.

I repeated these steps on the other bookcase and that was it. It took me just over 1 hour to do (not including the assembly of the bookcase).

My ideas are endless for this DIY.  There are so many different things you can do to make it your own. How would you design a DIY bookcase for your home?

Girls Week Begins!

My favorite woman is coming to town today! Yup, my mom Karen.  I am so excited to have her staying with us for the week.

She lives in West Palm Beach (start feeling sorry for her now) enjoying the retired life (yawn) with my stepdad Ed and their Boston Terrier Louie.  Well, he is their dog now but he he was my dog they adopted after taking him to Florida for the winter 4 years ago and refusing to bring him back.

So between golfing (they live on a golf course but who doesn't in Florida), animals, (which includes a dog, 2 parrots, some wild ducks & cat they feed) and their social gatherings,  it's needless to they are enjoying themselves. Being 1500 miles away has it's advantages and disadvantages. Of course Derek and I love to go visit them, especially in the cold winter months when we are pasty & need some vitamin D but due to the latter our quality time has dwindled since they moved south and we only see each other 4-5 times a year max.

She's in for a treat, I'm putting her to work! I mean, that's what daughter's do, right?  She will be my design assistant one day, a gardener another because she has the greenest thumb around, my shopping buddy because she is really good at it but I honestly think secretly her real reason for coming is to meet George our french bulldog! She has only seen him in videos, photos & face time calls . I can't wait for her to meet him, I mean he is her grandpuppy. She may try to "adopt" him too, remember what happened to Louie?  ;)

Here are some photos from our destination wedding to Puerto Vallarta Mexico in November. Isn't she gorg? I only hope I age like her. Stunner!

Fresh New Look!

I am OOOOOHHHH so excited to share with you Linen & Gold's new look! Yup, she got a facelift, and I am really thrilled with the way it came together.

I instilled the help of Aubrey Kinch of Kinch Designs to make my blog's appearance be what I really wanted. Sure, I could have learned coding and taken weeks to get it done but neither my husband nor my sanity would have faired well if I went that route. I did a little research, contacted a few blog designers and after looking at her website and seeing all the different looks she created, I knew that she was the perfect fit for what I was looking for.

She was so very easy to work with. Aubrey really listened to what I wanted (and being a designer sometimes what I "want" can change in a heartbeat). She pulled together the color palette and elements I thought would best represent my style in blog form. One thing I really wanted to incorporate in this blog was Greek Key. It is my all time FAVORITE pattern.  We played with a few ways in which to incorporate it into the layout but it just wasn't working. I started to come to terms with the fact that we may have to leave it out of the layout but VOILA¡ she sent the 3rd board and that was it!

If you are looking for a new design for your blog or website check Aubrey out. She has a real talent and a fresh, young approach to her work.

I am excited about the upcoming posts I have for ya'll.  I have lots of projects,  collaborations, design chatter & even a few DIY tutorials are in store!

So let me know what you think of the new face of Linen & Gold!  Isn't she purty?

Wednesday Words Of Wisdom

Happy Hump Day!

I hope everyone's week is going well so far! I thought I'd make this post simple. Just some Wednesday Words Of Wisdom to share.  I couldn't have said it better!

Each day you control your happiness. You control the things that get you down and the things that make you happy. So, if you happen to be driving to work and someone decides to flip you off or your hold the door for someone at the coffee shop and they don't say "thank you"  just remember, they too control how their day is going and you clearly are in more control! Plus they could have it much worse than you... they could have troubles that you don't!

Then get yourself a cup of coffee and in the wise words of my mom...

Adorning Greek Key

Pattern trends come and pattern trends go... just like anything , what was on trend slowly dies but one trend has stayed constant and that is Greek Key. I get excited over this pattern. It has been around for decades and although it isn't used with every design style, it is a CLASSIC!

The home I share with my husband was built in 1958 and was loaded with Greek Key. I say was reluctantly as we got rid of it, the only reason being is it wasn't in the most flattering of colors (avocado green & unflattering pink).

I am currently using this pattern in a design for a client in her master bathroom. While searching for inspiration I started to go crazy over the print even more so and created an entire Pinterest board of it!  I realized 2 things.   1.) I tend to like Greek Key in mostly neutral colors and  2.) I need that throw blanket!

Here are some Greek Key decor, rooms &  pieces I die over!

So next time you are thinking about adding some pattern play into your decor, think Greek Key, it's the key to a lasting, timeless statement!
